Human Body Systems 101

Are you having trouble understanding how the immune really works?  Well, here are some examples based on real life situations that might help you understand the topic more.

Field Hockey+Immune System= Alike?

The immune system's job is to fend off harmful invaders that try to attack the body.  The same thing happens in field hockey, the job of both the offenders and most importantly the defenders, is to keep the ball away from the goal, and instead drive it as far away from your goal as possible.  Imagine it like this: the goal is the human body.  It is precious, and if anything was to upset it by attacking it with harmful substances, it would be dangerous.  The same thing happens in field hockey, the defender's job is to clear the ball from the circle, and to make sure it doesn't even come close to their goal.  In the immune system, there are two main defenses, the nonspecific, or the "fortress wall" and the specific, or the "security guards".  When the ball in field hockey comes past the defenders, coming close to the goal, this triggers the alert sign for the offenders to push up and help defense defend the goal.  The same thing happens in the immune system, when harmful viruses enter the nose and go past the cilia in the nasal cavity, the body sends out an alert signal to tell the body they need it's team of white blood cells to come and attack.  So, if you think about it, the immune system is very similar to an average game of field hockey, because there is one goal....to keep the ball away from your goal!
