Human Body Systems 101

The human body is made up of 8 main body systems.  Each body system is responsible for carrying out it's job to help maintain balance, or homeostasis, in the body at all times.  Some body systems work together, helping each other carry out it's functions.  Each body system is also responsible for preforming one or a few COL's, or Characteristics of Life.  By following all of these things mentioned before, each body system is able to stay on track and carry out it's duties.

The Body Systems...

*Nervous System- responds to changes in the external and internal environments
The Parts/Processes:  Brain, Spinal Cord, Neurons/Nerve Cells, Synapses, Receptors, Neurotransmitters

Endocrine System- keeping everything on track
The Parts/Processes:  Glands, Hormones, Target Cells, Receptors
-Consists of glands located throughout the body, that produce hormones that affect the activities of other cells.  The cells that have receptors for particular hormones are called target cells.  These receptors follow a key lock method, where the hormone can only attach to the receptor if it is the right match.

*Digestive System-  From BIG to Small
The Parts/Processes:  Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Rectum, Anus, Villi, Mechanical Digestion, Chemical Digestion

Respiratory System- in with the good (Oxygen), out with the bad (Carbon Dioxide)
The Parts/ Processes:  Nose, Nasal Cavity, Trachea, Bronchi, Bronchioles, Alveoli, Lungs, Diaphragm
-The process by which oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between the cells, the blood and air in the lungs.

Circulatory System-  feeding the body and keeping things flowing to and from cells
The Parts/Processes:  heart, Arteries, Arterioles, Veins, Venules, Oxygenated Blood, Deoxygenated Blood, Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Platelets, Hemoglobin, Capillaries
-Supplies cells throughout the body with nutrients and oxygen needed to stay alive.

*Immune System-   fighting off invaders
The Parts/Processes:  White Blood Cells, Phagocytosis, Antigens, Pathogens, Antibodies, passive Immunity, Active Immunity

Skeletal-Muscular System-  support and movement
The Parts/Processes:  Muscles, Bones, Tendons, Ligaments, Bone Marrow
-Muscles provided the forces that put the body into motion.

Excretory System-  getting rid of metabolic waste
The Parts/Processes:  Kidneys, Nephrons, Ureter, Bladder, Urethra
-Part of many processes that maintain homeostasis, the process which these metabolic wastes are eliminated is called excretion.
